Are Polypropylene and Polyester Interchangeable?
No — polypropylene and polyester are two entirely different materials. Even though both are synthetic, plastic-based fabrics used in similar applications, the confusion is common — especially in industrial and agricultural settings where polypro vs polyester choices come up regularly in ground cover, frost protection, and geotextile applications.
The quickest way to tell them apart: drop a scrap in water. Polypropylene floats. Polyester sinks. That single difference reflects a broader set of physical properties that should drive your material choice.

Which is Better for Outdoor Use? It Depends on the Application
Polyester is more naturally UV resistant, making it a stronger choice for long-term outdoor exposure. However, UV stabilized polypropylene performs very well outdoors and is widely used in ground cover, woven shade cloth, and multi-season frost protection fabric. For short-term or buried applications, polypropylene is the better value. For permanent, high-load, or high-temperature outdoor use, polyester holds up longer.
